    Quietest Rottnest beaches and bays

If your idea of a holiday is a slow morning swim and almost no one else around, start here.

The bays nearest the ferry are wonderful, but they're also the busiest. If you're chasing the version of Rottnest where you wade into clear water and barely hear another voice, a few areas reward the slightly longer walk or bike ride.

    Best for
    • Travellers who'd happily walk or ride 15 minutes for emptier water
    • Snorkellers and slow-morning swimmers
    • Couples and small groups wanting space and quiet
    Good to know
    • There's no shop or café at Stark Bay, so a small backpack with water and snacks makes the trip easier
    • First-time visitors sometimes prefer being closer to the ferry on day one and exploring the western bays as day trips
    • Easterly winds in the morning often leave the south-facing bays calmer than the north coast, worth checking the forecast the day before
A quiet western Rottnest bay with clear turquoise water and no people in sight.
The western end on a calm morning. Worth the extra ten minutes.

    Fay's Bay

Fay's is the quiet sibling of the western bays. Premium self-contained units, scenic outlooks, and easy access to some of the island's best snorkelling without the crowd that clusters around The Basin.

Stark Bay and the western end

Stark Bay is a short bike ride past the salt lakes. It rarely feels busy, even in summer. There's no café and no shop nearby, that's the entire point. Pack a picnic and a snorkel.

    Little Salmon Bay

Not a place to stay, but worth planning a morning around if quiet snorkelling is your thing. Get there early and you'll often have the marked trail to yourself before the day-trippers arrive.

    Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming all western bays are equally remote

Fay's is genuinely quiet but still walkable to amenities. Stark Bay is properly remote. Pick the one that matches the trip you actually want.

Going at the wrong time of day

Even quiet bays fill briefly mid-afternoon when day-trippers arrive. Mornings and late afternoons are the calm windows.

    Forgetting supplies

There's no shop near Stark Bay. Pack water, snacks and reef-safe sunscreen before heading out.

    Insider strategy

    Aim for shoulder months

Late March, April and October pair quiet weather with quieter bays. Even the most popular snorkelling spots feel local.

    Watch broadly, not narrowly

Quiet-bay units are scarce. Watching Fay's, Stark and nearby precincts together is almost always more productive than watching one.

    Related precincts

Quiet-bay units are some of the hardest to catch on Open Day, but they reappear regularly as cancellations. A Flexible Watch across a few western-end precincts is usually the calmest way in.
